about

"On June 15 improviser, tenor saxophonist, and audio artist Sam Weinberg announces the release of A/V/E – a series of fixed media works that together form a crookedly unified gestalt.

Guided by the spectre of Joseph Beuys’ “Actions, Vitrines, and Environments”, from which the album lifts its title, Weinberg channels the process-based art of late 60’s sculpture icons (Serra, Morris, Hesse, Nauman) and fuses it with the sonic fluidity he’s known for in his improvisational work. On A/V/E he trades the social structure of the improvisational setting – along with the saxophone – for the sculptural, while still working with the same formal concerns one hears in his music with groups W2 and BLOOR– texture, timbre, repetition, jagged and unpredictable rhythms, structure, dynamics.

Weinberg pulls the sounds from his immediate surroundings, his apartment, the street outside, overheard conversations, engines and the sound of the act recording itself, arranging and manipulating them into something at once visceral and rarified. Then at key moments, he shows his hand in the material and the focus turns from the assemblage of sounds to the act of assembling those sounds. These moments seem to pervade the rest of the works and manifest a haunting and engaging perceptual experience." - Anticausal Systems
